...he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.
Philippians 2:8 NLT
Jesus humbled himself. So interesting to mention as He was so humble in all of his workings. But here, He took a special step to tell God that He trusts Him.
Jesus shared a moment with God that took courage. Jesus had begged for Him to take away this cup, but added he was willing to die on the cross. Jesus revealed this doubt that He might also grow in faith.
The doubt was with himself. The doubt was in the measure of his own strength. Jesus knew he alone did not have the fortitude to overcome the pain and agony of the cross.
Jesus knew that the theme of his last day in Earth would be an agony like no other. The criminal's death was not just a final act but a strength obliterating day of flesh-and-bone destroying actions by merciless soldiers. Jesus' fear was that He would in absolute pain deny the faith He treasured above life.
Jesus looked down upon the soldiers who offered Him sour wine with the love of His father. This disconcerting gaze unraveled them. Their conviction to break his legs wafted away. God was glorified in that scripture was once again confirmed!
