The greatest among you must be a servant.
Matthew 23:11 NLT
The greatest means the one who God has placed in higher position. Even that person serves.
But those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.
Matthew 23:12 NLT
But even though placed in higher position, this lifted individual will "be humbled." They will be in spirit, much lower, much more lowly. They will praise others. They will give honor to other's efforts.
What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you shut the door of the Kingdom of Heaven in people’s faces. You won’t go in yourselves, and you don’t let others enter either.
Matthew 23:13-14 NLT
What happens with our spirit when we drive others from God? Our witness keeps others from God. We are not able to share God and we do not enter His presence ourselves.
When we are unable to spend time with God, our faith suffers. Our witness suffers. Our relationship with God weakens.
What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you cross land and sea to make one convert, and then you turn that person into twice the child of hell you yourselves are!
Matthew 23:15 NLT
In fact sorrow is waiting. And for those who go far to bring someone to Christ, then turn them away... Much grief comes!
