Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord:
Hebrews 12:14 NKJV
Pursue... Find a path towards, go to great lengths to discover.
Pursue. Go after. Identify a way that will help you find it.
Peace. Comfort towards. All people.
Not just a few you chose to care about.
Not just family. Not just a spouse.
looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled;
Hebrews 12:15 NKJV
Watching over our connections. Letting no one “fall short of the grace of God.” Being so mindful of the need of others to succeed in faith… So much that our attention is on them. We watch for their distractions or their focus to be thwarted.
If not, bitterness could arise for our connections. Envy, jealousy, conflict can steal their concern for faith. Bitterness is the opposite of joy and it wants to replace the positive emotions God time gives.
lest there be any fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright.
Hebrews 12:16 NKJV
When you consider what could happen to our focus, Esau is one example. He gave so he had, his inheritance, for a temporary problem.
For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears.
Hebrews 12:17 NKJV
Later, in regret, Esau tried to regain the “blessing.” But without repentance, Esau only cried empty tears.
So when we struggle with our thoughts about peace and how worthwhile the effort, consider what we are losing. We are losing our birthright. Our forever home in heaven’s oasis… a privilege that gives so much more than a present day morsel of daily bread.
